JARE additional equity investment in Lynas and heavy rare earth offtake

ActiveFunding or subsidyOfftake agreement

Summary

Japan Australia Rare Earth (JARE), co-founded in 2011 by Sojitz and JOGMEC, decided an additional AUD 200 million equity investment in Lynas Rare Earths for Lynas' mid-term growth plan, which includes light-REE production capacity expansion and the start of heavy-REE (dysprosium, terbium) separation. Sojitz and JOGMEC also entered into an agreement with Lynas to supply up to 65% of the heavy REEs produced by Lynas from Mt Weld feedstock to the Japanese market. JARE is a joint Sojitz–JOGMEC vehicle, and the release does not break the AUD 200 million down between the two.

Analytical significance

The clearest long-run example of patient state-backed offtake-plus-equity to build non-Chinese heavy-REE supply, the chokepoint China most dominates.
