Government of Canada invests to unlock Canada’s critical minerals advantage (PDAC 2026 funding announcement)
Summary
On 3 March 2026 the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources announced up to $165.2 million for 22 projects across five NRCan programmes: the First and Last Mile Fund (which subsumed the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund), the Energy Innovation Program, the CMRDD program, the Indigenous Natural Resource Partnerships program and the Critical Minerals Geoscience and Data initiative. Five name a tracked material and are recorded: $1,878,250 (conditionally approved) for power and road infrastructure to Defense Metals' Wicheeda rare earth mine site; $4,750,000 for Green Graphite Technologies' battery-grade graphite demonstration; and three geoscience studies naming graphite, rare earth elements, tungsten and lithium. The $165.2 million total is not recorded, because most of it funds untracked minerals and infrastructure.
Analytical significance
Shows the long tail of Canadian support: small, programme-by-programme awards, with the tracked-material share concentrated in graphite upgrading and rare-earth mine infrastructure. The same graphite company received CMRDD support in 2024, so its capital history now spans two programmes.
