Reading this record
What the evidence says — and does not say
- What kind of figure?
- Non-binding indicationA non-binding letter of intent or interest that names an amount: possible support, not money committed to anyone. Listed in its own layer, never summed, and never counted as binding, not yet binding, capital, backing or co-investment.
- What has happened legally?
- AnnouncedPublicly announced; no decision or agreement is stated.
- Has money been paid?
- Follow the payment evidenceThis status does not itself establish a cash payment. In particular, a signed contract does not necessarily establish an obligation of funds.
- What does it link to?
- Project attributionOne registered project is linked directly to this row. The link alone does not prove the amount was paid or that the project advanced.
This value role is not included in SMPT's public-recipient commitment totals. A ceiling, indication, private contribution or project cost is not an additional government award. A financial record alone never independently verifies construction, commissioning or production. Read SMPT's counting and evidence rules.
Amount
As stated “a letter of interest for up to US$430 million from Export Development Canada”
USD 430,000,000 · Up to · Currency stated in the source
This figure is a non-binding indication, not money committed to a recipient. It is never added to commitments or to other roles.

Status
Financial and physical progress are separate histories. The last entry is current.
Financial
- Announcedcurrent
A letter of interest, which is not a financing commitment; its date is not stated.
Implementation
- Constructioncurrent
NMG dates the start of Phase 2 Matawinie Mine construction to April 13, 2026 and reports ongoing civil works. This physical milestone is separate from the May 15 FID and May 19 ceremony; it does not state production or financing disbursement.
Notes
A letter of interest, recorded as a non-binding indication, not as a commitment: it names an amount but is not a financing commitment, so it is in no sum. A separate Canada Infrastructure Bank letter of interest is named without an amount and is not recorded. Review on 2026-10-02 found a later US$335-million EDC/CIB project-debt commitment letter in the Q2 MD&A. Its different amount, providers and facilities do not establish that this historical US$430-million indication was contracted, paid or formally lapsed. Mine construction does not change its non-binding value role.
